Course Description

This course introduces students to three literary genres, namely drama, poetry, and prose, that are written in English. The course teaches literary elements that construct literary works and reflect the creative thinking of the writer and the social context of the text. By understanding how the writer makes us of the literary elements, students will be able to appreciate and analyze literature. The course applies interactive teaching methods, independent work, and discovery learning. Students will be guided to analyze social issues depicted in the text, notice the narrative strategies, and practice presenting and discussing their findings with others in the class to enhance their understanding of the text. At the end of the course, students will be able to create a short review of the literary work.

At the end of the course, students will be able to ...

  1. explain the meaning and function of literature as well as identify the elements of literature.
  2. apply the close reading method to a literary text and text annotation.
  3. analyze the elements of the three genres in literature to draw an interpretation.
  4. configure the theme of a literary work from the connection of its elements. 
  5. able to self-reflect on their own understanding about the text, communicate with other students in a written format, express appreciation and input to one another's opinion.

The course will be delivered in English, and the videos will provide Indonesian subtitles.

The course is self-paced and is conducted asynchronously. This means learners are responsible for doing the learning activities independently at their own pace during a learning period.

Teaching method 

  • Self-paced, students can freely manage their time to follow the activities. Materials are available for students each week on Fridays. Quizzes and Exams are open throughout the semester.
  • Appropriate for pre-university students (high school students, students with high school degree but not yet enrolled in college)
