Course Description:

Popular Culture is something that we consume in our everyday lives. Why and how should we problematize it particularly in relation to identity construction? By participating in this MOOC, you will be exploring issues and case studies related to identity in popular culture texts and practices. Some texts to be discussed in this MOOC are advertisements, comics, television series, films, videos on YouTube or social media posts. The main issues to be discussed are race, ethnicity, religion, gender and social class particularly on how one's identity is positioned or being positioned. Participants will learn how to interpret popular culture texts as an ideological battleground especially in identity politics.

Course Learning Outcome:

After completing this MOOC, participants will be able to understand how identity and ideology are affirmed, contested or negotiated in the popular culture texts and practices.

How to get a certificate of completion:

  • Watch and/or listen to all the audio visual materials and do the quizzes embedded in the materials.
  • Do ALL the quizzes for the reading materials (minimum 60% of the highest grade)
  • Participate and answer 80% of the reflective questions in the discussion forum
  • Fill in the survey at the end of the course
